Technology and Transformations in the Creative Industries.

Do we need new maps?

The Department of Media and Creative Industries at Bucks New University, in association with Fisheye Film Festival and UK Music, invite proposals for papers, panels, performances and other interventions that might address some of the topics in the brief below.

The creative industries have experienced huge changes over the past two decades. New technologies have revolutionised the means of production and distribution of all popular creative activities, in music, in film, in TV and print. The old, vertical hierarchies, where the creation of content was managed centrally and distributed through defined networks have been disrupted, and new and flatter ontologies of creation and distribution have to some extent replaced them. The academy has a role to play in articulating these issues and in preparing students to work within the industry.

We are interested in proposals that address how these changes have already transformed the creative industries and what further changes we might expect.

Topics might address, but are not limited to:

  • Finding audiences, locating your customer, rebuilding the eco-system between audience and creators in a virtual environment.
  • Measuring cultural value. How do we use data to establish the benefits of cultural activity across regions and communities
  • Technologies of future performance. Seeing and hearing new worlds. Live in your living room. Will streaming of ‘as live’ content replace going out?
  • Precariousness and professionalism; if everything is for free, how are you going to get paid?
  • Who pays? The role of public and private investment in the development of new tech and knowledge creation.
  • Barriers to creativity and participation.
  • The interface between the academy and industry.

Abstracts of up to 300 words for individual papers, 500 words for panels, detailing individual contributions and proposals for performances or other interventions (up to 500 words plus details of technical requirements) to be sent to Stan Erraught by Sept 1st 2016
